13 Sizzling Blog Post Ideas to End the Year with a Bang

Can it really be December already? It’s hard to believe that Christmas is only THREE weeks from today!

Where has 2013 gone?

With only a few weeks left in the year, you might be wondering how to wrap things up with your blog. Although this is a busy time of year, you shouldn’t let your blog fizzle out.

Instead, focus on finding some ways to end the year on a high note and get some momentum going as you start 2014.

Year-End Blog Post Ideas

Not sure what to write about?

Here are some quick and easy year-end blog post ideas to help you finish the year strong:

1. Top trends or news from 2013.

Looking back on the year’s high (or low) notes can be a great way to end the year. For instance, Mark Schaefer wrote about the “Psychology of Selfies” earlier this week. This highlighted a huge trend from 2013 — especially since “selfie” was named the word of the year.

What were the top trends that emerged this year? What changes have you seen in your industry? What news will impact how you do business next year?

2. Predict trends for 2014.

People and businesses are already looking ahead to next year. What should they expect? Ease concerns and showcase your thought leadership by sharing your ideas on where things are going.

This kind of post works well across a variety of industries — “Top Financial Trends to Watch in 2014” or “Unexpected Design Trends to Emerge in 2014.” Not only do people really like these posts, but they also perform well in search engines.

3. Top posts on your blog.

This is a simple and easy way to end the year. You can highlight your most popular posts based on traffic, social media shares, comments, etc. Or, you can feature your favorite posts from the year. Either way, share a little about each post and provide links to each.

4. Best articles from others.

Tis the season of giving, so why not give your favorite blogs some love? Share a list of your favorite articles or blog posts from the year and why people should give them a read.

5. Create a video message.

Get personal and share a video message from you, your team or your leadership. This is a great way to thank readers and customers personally for their support. A client of ours did this last year and then included the video post in their e-letter. It was one of their more popular posts of the year.

6. Year in review.

What are some of your company’s key accomplishments and highlights from the year? It can be really rewarding to look back and share some of the big wins for your company. And, it doesn’t hurt to let the world know about it too.

7. Lessons you’ve learned.

What are the biggest lessons you learned personally or through your business this year? Sharing these lessons can be valuable — especially if you frame it in a way to help others.

For instance, I’ve written about the lessons I’ve learned from three years of blogging and lessons from my first year as an entrepreneur. Both

8.

Create a “Best of” List.

People love “best of” lists.
So, share some of the best ideas, news, trends or campaigns you’ve seen.

For instance, technology companies can talk about the best apps or products that emerged this year. Attorneys could discuss the best new laws that will take effect next year. Realtors can highlight the top selling homes in their area. You get the idea.

9. Build a “Worst” or “Wackiest” list.

The only thing we love more than “Best of “ lists are ones about blunders, mishaps and news of the weird. I don’t suggest you tear anyone down or go super negative, but you can certainly talk about worst ideas or ridiculous news you’ve seen throughout the year.

For instance, marketers could talk about “worst PR nightmares of 2013” or “biggest social media blunders“.

Other industries could talk about “wackiest diet trends” or “strangest product releases.” There’s likely something that will work

10. Get reader feedback.

If you were not in the practice of collecting feedback from your readers, now would be a good time to start. Create a survey to get some quick reader feedback. This will help you get some ideas on what’s working, what’s not and what people want to see going into 2014.

11. Be silly, fun and entertaining.

Because this is a busy time of year, doing something fun and entertaining will really get people’s attention. What could you do that’s a little out of the ordinary?

Look at what Diet Coke did with their ugly Christmas sweater creator? Or, how about OffiiceMax with their infamous “Elf Yourself” application? People will take a few minutes out of their busy day for a good laugh.

12. Share photos or videos of your team.

As we talk a lot about, people like to do business with those they know, like and trust, so why not find a way to showcase your team? Maybe you could do a photo slideshow through Flickr or create a video montage of photos set to fun music. Or, you could create a video that showcases every member of your team. Don’t be afraid to let your hair down a bit and have some fun with this.

13. Share Plans or Goals for 2014.

What lies ahead for you and your company? What do you promise readers? Giving some insight into what people can expect from you and your blog can be a great way to create excitement (and a little accountability) for your efforts.
